Restaurants

We have visited a number of restaurants around the area.  Here are our thoughts on some of them.  The cards have been left in the house, together with cards collected and left by guests over the years.

The Immediate Area

Card for La Terrasse La Terrasse in Duras is our favourite restaurant around here.  Located by the car park opposite the Chateau des Ducs, we have eaten at La Terrasse at least once on each stay we've had in the area.  In the summer, it is open every evening, but only at weekends outside of peak times.  The menu is interesting - in the past they have served a very good magret, some delicious casseroles, including a realy good rabbit dish and my favourite starter - black pudding and apple in a filo pastry.
Our third most popular restaurant in Duras.....  The place is fine, if a bit stuffy, and there are a range of menus depending on how much you want to eat and spend.
Au Fil de l'Eau This is a fish restaurant on the banks of the Dordogne at Port St Foy - you can see it on the right as you head notrth over the bridge.  A range of set menus: good quality and good service.
This is on Rue de la République in St Foy La Grande - the main road through the centre, heading east- west.  Standard french café food - good but nothing really special.
Gensac - the Café de la Paix is a nice little café where you can sit outside and watch the world go by (what there is in a sleepy village like Gensac!).  Good croque monsieur and frîtes!

Castillon / St Émilion

Chai Pascal in St Émilion is not one of the touristy places around the church tower.  It is a small bistro with a small but very good wine list.  The plat du jour is always good - chicken curry, or confit de canard.

This was a great find in St Gènes de Castillon, just north of Castillon la Bataille, recommended to us by our neighbours.  This is both a wine shop and restaurant combined.  Amongst the tables are stacks of wine boxes from the Côtes de Castillon region (which is next door to, of similar quality to, and considerably cheaper than St Émilion).  The food is very good, although the a la carte menu can be quite pricy.  The set menu du jour for €14.50 fed us very well, coming with a very nice glass of wine!

Further Afield

This is another "non-touristy" restaurant located in a side road near the Grand Thêatre in Bordeaux.  There number of tables in the narrow street, most of which get the sun at some stage during the lunch hours.  There is an interesting menu du jour, with a couple of starters about four mains and a dessert  - there is of course the standard menu as well.  Our main courses were varied - a very large interesting chicken salad, fish with chorizo and roasted vegetables, steak and chips and a morrocan lamb dish with quinoa.  On the wine list, it was good to see a bottle of Clairet, which was just right for a warm mid-day meal!
This is a cheap and cheerful cafe in the arcades around the market square in Sauveterre de Guyenne.  There is a set menu with three courses and 25ml of wine for around €14.
